The Hidden Roots of Aikido by Shiro Omiya

What does this book have to do with Shotokan you ask? Well, some advanced Shotokan practitioners who are into studying kata applications believe that movements from karate kata contain Ju-jutsu moves such as joint locks and throws. I bought the book on the recommendation of one such practitioner and when I first looked at the book I thought there was no way this stuff had anything to do with Shotokan kata. After some prodding and a harder look, lo and behold, some of the techniques these Daitoryu guys practice are right there in our katas! On page 120-121 you've got movements 11 and 12 from Heian Sandan. Page 140 has the ending of Jion. Page 144 has movement 6 from Bassai Dai. I'm sure there's more that I haven't discovered yet. Get this book, it's cool.

Shotokan Karate : Its History and Evolution by Randall Hassell

This book outlines the history of shotokan karate with an emphasis on Shotokan Karate in North America. Mr. Hassell has seen all the machinations of the various organizations practicing JKA style shotokan in North America. From the AAKF to the ISKF to the AJKA to ASKA, he was there for it all. A must read.
