TAX RECORDS

 

Federal Direct Tax of 1798 St. Mary’s County, Maryland.  Wanda M. Schuhart.  255p.  The 1798 tax was a levy upon owners of real property and slaves.  Lists the districts – combination of hundreds – owners and occupants, dwellings and outbuildings including size, description, location and valuation.  Slaves are categorized but not names.

 

St. Mary’s County Tax Assessment Records 1793-1849.  Research by Charles E. Fenwick and transcribed by Wanda M. Schuhart.  523p.  Soft cover.  Includes year 1793-1796, 1812, 1821, 1826, 1831, 1846, and 1849.  Over 8700 entries are listed in the volume.  [In 1831, a fire destroyed the County Courthouse and with it many of the records.  Mr. Fenwick sources to recreate the records included tax assessment and land abstract records held at the Maryland State Archives and records that were rescued by concerned citizens at the time of the fire.]
